1830 - The American Temperance Society extended Rush's campaign against spirituous liquors to include all alcoholic beverages.
1835 - There were more than 8000 local, county, and state auxiliaries claiming a membership of more than 1.5 million people; nearly one in five free adults in the United States were associated with the American Temperance Society.
1838 - Massachusetts enacted the 15 Gallon Law which forbade the sale of alcohol in less quantity than 15 gallons to be delivered and carried at one time.
1851 - Maine became the 1st state to pass a law prohibiting alcohol. Known as "Maine Liquor Laws."
1852 - Stanton and Anthony found the New York State Women's Temperance Society.
1853 - Lucy Stone appeals for women's suffrage to lawmakers through the Massachusetts Constitutional Convention.
1855 - 11 other states had followed Maine's passing of alcohol prohibition (majority of which were northern states).
1840-1860 - Over 4 million people immigrate to the United States. Most are from Germany or Ireland.
1874 - Women's Christian Temperance Union founded.
